"Using the Bible in the Public Square"

Featuring Richard Nelson

nelson-r-web

“Using the Bible in the Public Square.” Pastors and other church leaders are called on to do “public theology” to an audience beyond the confines of the church. The ELCA Constitution says this: “every ordained minister shall: . . . witness to the Kingdom of God in the community, in the nation, and abroad; and . . . speak publicly to the world in solidarity with the poor and oppressed, calling for justice and proclaiming God’s love for the world” (ELCA Constitution 7.31.12). Pastors do this sort of thing at occasions for public prayer, panels, public forums, meetings of school boards and town councils, high school baccalaureate services, chaplaincy for volunteer fire departments; chances to write a column for the local paper, and events that attract community audiences like weddings and funerals. Obviously, the Bible is an important resource for this sort of thing, but how to use the Bible in such situations is the question (or perhaps better, how God uses the Bible through our ministry). For all the respect they may have for the Bible, fewer and fewer people outside the church are going automatically going to buy into the “normative sacred scripture” argument.

Richard Nelson is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, where he has been the W. J. A. Power Professor of Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament since 2001. A 1970 graduate of ELTS, one of Trinity Lutheran Seminary’s predecessor schools, he received his PhD in Old Testament Studies from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia in 1973. He served as pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh (1974-77) and then taught religion at Ferrum College in Virginia (1977-81). Between 1981 and 2001 he was on the faculty Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary, eventually as Kraft Professor of Biblical Studies. He is the author of seven books and numerous articles on biblical themes.
